Councils boost income with green energy

KATIE INSCH • March 15th, 2025

We are seeing more councils maximising their assets to secure new income streams through renewable energy.

Gravesham Council in Kent recently revealed that they are in negotiations with Speedgreen Limited to lease three acres of vacant land for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The Council are set to be paid a minimum annual rental of £120,000 and up to a maximum of £175,000 for a parcel of land which has been vacant for many years and is of limited alternative or developable value due to the adjacent water treatment works.

Gravesham Council has been commended for its commercial approach to generating income, embracing renewable energy opportunities and helping with the collective push towards Net Zero.

At Renewables Connect, we have also had constructive conversations with a number of Councils who are looking to put vacant, surplus and underused land on our platform. It’s free to list and advertises its availability to our subscribers who are active developers seeking land for renewable energy projects.

If you work for or advise a Council or Local Authority and you think our platform would be of interest, give us a call or email, or list your land on our platform to try it out. It’s free, there’s no obligation and it could bring you income to reinvest in your local area.
