Fort Augustus Substation extension proposal approved

KATIE INSCH • April 20th, 2025

Highland Council’s South Planning Committee have recently approved the Fort Augustus substation extension at Auchterawe.

The substation extension, which is part of the Beauly-Denny 400kV uprating project and is the first major Accelerating Strategic Transmission Infrastructure (ASTI) planning application to be determined and is a key component of plans to upgrade the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland. The ASTI scheme is designed to accelerate the delivery of vital electricity transmission projects needed to achieve the UK’S 2030 net-zero goals.

The extension of the substation will play a key role in enabling and supporting the continued growth in onshore renewable projects in the surrounding area and assist with the transmission of electricity from further afield onshore and offshore renewables projects across the north of Scotland.
