Scotland’s Green Economy Is Already Worth £10.2 Billion – What Does That Mean for Landowners?
Sandy Kirkpatrick • July 20th, 2026Renewable energy is often talked about as an industry of the future. But according to a new report from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Scotland’s net-zero economy is already making a significant contribution to the country’s prosperity.
The report reveals that net-zero industries now contribute £10.2 billion to Scotland’s economy and support more than 105,000 jobs. In fact, the sector now accounts for 4.9% of Scotland’s total economic output—more than double the contribution made by agriculture. With an estimated £211 billion pipeline of future investment, the message is clear: Scotland’s green economy is no longer an emerging opportunity; it is an established and growing part of the nation’s economy.
For rural landowners, these figures should not be overlooked.
As investment in renewable energy accelerates, so too does demand for land capable of supporting the infrastructure behind it. While wind farms and solar developments remain highly visible, developers are increasingly seeking land for battery energy storage systems, substations, underground cable routes and grid infrastructure. These projects are all essential to delivering the UK’s transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
The report also highlights the regional impact of this growth. Perth and Kinross—home to Renewables Connect—is identified as one of Scotland’s leading net-zero hotspots, with 12% of its local economic output linked to net-zero industries. This reflects the area’s strong renewable energy sector, skilled workforce and strategic importance within Scotland’s evolving energy landscape.
For landowners considering diversification, the opportunity extends beyond generating clean electricity. Leasing land for renewable energy or supporting infrastructure can provide long-term, stable income while helping to meet growing demand for the electricity network needed to power homes, businesses and industry.
For developers, the findings reinforce confidence in Scotland as one of the UK’s most attractive markets for renewable investment. A mature supply chain, supportive policy environment and significant investment pipeline all point towards continued growth over the coming decades.
The CBI’s findings underline an important shift in perspective. Renewable energy is no longer simply an environmental ambition—it is a major economic driver supporting jobs, investment and rural prosperity across Scotland.
For landowners and rural businesses, the question is no longer whether the green economy is coming. It’s how they can position themselves to benefit from one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors.
